ERCO Knowledge
Lighting education has long been part of how ERCO works. Since the 1990s, publications like the Handbook of Lighting Design, the Lichtbericht magazine and ERCO's seminars have shared the idea that light is the fourth dimension of architecture. At the centre is a perception-based approach: good lighting starts not with luminaires, but with what people need to see and how a space should feel.
My task was to develop the concepts for its lighting setups and render them in 3D. Each scene had to show one clear idea, whether diffuse versus directed light, the effect of different lighting types or how light changes the atmosphere of a room, in a way that's easy to see and compare.
The new Knowledge platform carries this thinking into a digital format. Instead of reading about the effect of light, users can see it, compare it and adjust it themselves, making a complex subject easier to understand and apply in real projects. ERCO Knowledge brings together interactive courses, articles and tools for understanding light. Whether someone is new to the subject, an architect lighting a gallery or a client planning a building, there’s a clear place to start. Short learning paths cover the fundamentals, from the language and direction of light to how it shapes perception, and can be worked through at your own pace.
